Spider Bites Piercing: The Complete Guide

Spider bites are two lip piercings set close together — usually just a few millimeters apart — on one side of the lower lip, each passing through to the inside of the mouth. The name comes from the resemblance to a spider's twin puncture marks, and the off-center placement is what separates them from the symmetric bites family.

That tight spacing is technically demanding. The two channels must be parallel and evenly gapped, with enough tissue between them to stay healthy; pierce them too close and the strip of skin between can break down over time. This is a piercing where the marking stage deserves obsessive attention from both you and the piercer.

Because the pair sits so close, many piercers recommend doing one, letting the swelling resolve, and adding the second a few weeks later — swollen tissue makes accurate spacing for the second hole a guessing game. One session is possible with experienced hands; two sessions is the conservative play.

Each piercing sits around 5 out of 10 — a sharp pinch through the lower lip, over in a second. If you do both at once, the second needle enters tissue that is already swelling, which most people describe as more pressure than pain.

Expect one side of your lower lip to puff up noticeably for the first week, which looks and feels more lopsided than symmetric piercings do. Cold water helps, salty and spicy food does not, and you will bite the jewelry at least once while relearning how to chew on the other side of your mouth — everyone does.

Spider bites heal in 6 to 12 weeks. Lip tissue is fast, but the two channels sit close enough to share every bump and irritation — a snag on one stud stresses both, and an infection would not stay politely in its own hole. Treat the pair as one wound with two entrances.

Care is standard oral-piercing doctrine: sterile saline outside twice a day, alcohol-free rinse after eating, gentle brushing, no twisting or tongue-fiddling. Downsize both posts once swelling resolves — with two discs in one small patch of inner lip, oversized posts do double the damage to your gums.
